2014 Porsche Macan Spy Video
Porsche's Macan is on track for a reveal late next year and prototypes for the compact crossover are currently being wrung out on the Nürburgring to ensure its every bit as capable as one of the automaker’s sports cars.
We’ve managed to scoop one of the prototypes, presented here in our exclusive spy video which confirms the high-riding Porsche should have no trouble carving up a race track.
Despite the prototype's rapid pace, the minimal body roll indicates the Macan is already a very sporty and composed compact crossover.
The vehicle will be Porsche’s fifth model line and built at the automaker’s recently expanded plant in Leipzig, Germany in late 2013, which likely means a showroom debut early the following year.
Sharing a platform and engines with the Audi Q5, the Macan will nevertheless be as Porsche as the Cayenne, which shares some of its underpinnings with the Q7. To help differentiate the two models, Porsche is expected to add its own Torsen torque-sensing differential, install a torque vectoring system on the rear axle, widen the vehicle track and even offer its latest seven-speed manual and seven-speed PDK dual-clutch units as transmission options.
Of the possible shared engines, a 3.0-liter turbodiesel rated at 300-plus horsepower and 480 pound-feet of torque is one of the most interesting--though it may not make it to the U.S. We also expect a range of V-6 gasoline engines to be offered, perhaps even a 370-horsepower Macan Turbo model. A base four-cylinder rated at about 220 horsepower and a Macan S Hybrid are also rumored to be in the works.
2014 Porsche Macan teaserAs for styling, an official teaser sketch, though highly stylized, reveals a similar treatment to that found on the current Cayenne, as well as headlights featuring the squared-off look seen on the new 2013 Porsche Boxster.
Despite the near-finished look of this prototype, the Macan is still close to 18 months from production, meaning many of the details could yet change. Furthermore, while the five-door model is the subject of the spy shots and video, a sportier three-door variant is possible.
Porsche's "cautious estimate" for the Macan's sales volume, according to CEO Matthias Mueller, is about 50,000-55,000 units per year, with most of the buyers new to the brand. Regardless of where you stand on the Porsche sports car purity spectrum, the infusion of cash and sales volume for the brand could be good for the brand’s other models, just as the Cayenne was.
