I have just purchased a uk 2004 cayenne 4.5 v8 and the engine has developed a strange knocking noise. When cold the knocking noise and tappets are loud, when it warms up it does quieten down, but the knocking and tappet noise is still there. Does anyone have any ideas what this could be? Your help would be really appreciated

I dont think its his coils. They don't really make a knocking noise when they're misfiring. It could just be lifter tick. I would try going with a thinner oil and see if it improves the noise.

Check the engine oil dipstick and make sure you got oil in that puppy. Also if oil level is good take it to a shop check oil pressure and go from there. Low oil pressure is an indicator of major engine trouble ie main bearings, valve train...

sounds like it's a lifter that's the problem, like mentioned above maybe your oil pressure is off. have you had the issue looked at by a mechanic as yet?
