Hello everyone since I am new to owning a Porsche Cayenne. I am looking for some information. This 2016 GTS I bought I want to replace the brakes all around. I have a few questions about the brake system on these trucks.

1. I see there is Brake Wear Sensor. I have never had this on any of my other cars before. So I know how to do basic Brake jobs bleeding and changing pads and rotors. When it comes to this brake wear sensor do you have to rest anything in the control system on the car? Or can I just pop the calipers off push the piston back in and replace the pads and put everything back together and call it a day?

2. Is there anything else I need to know about the brake system? I see you need some special tools like Tripple Square Spline bits. Is there anything else that I might need? I see there are some different Caliper colors. I have Red ones. Does that mean anything or is it just paint colors?

3. What is a good scanner tool for these trucks? I need something that can read all Porsche systems. Even though the truck is new to me it is still used and I know it is going to need some work. Yesterday I had a Chassis system failure park vehicle safely pop up. So I want to see if I can figure out what is going on with that as well. But I need to be able to read the system.

Thank you for any information that you can give.

Hi Jay,

I cannot answer 1 or 2 but for 3 I use this scanner:

Amazon.com: LAUNCH OBD2 Scanner for Car, 2023 Elite CRP129X Scan Tool with 8 Services Oil/EPB/SAS/TPMS/BMS/Throttle/DPF Reset,Injector Coding, ABS SRS TCM/Engine Code Reader, WiFi Lifetime Free Update, Auto VIN : Automotive

However, I'm not sure if it will satisfy your needs. It certainly does the trick for me and reads all of the systems. Beauty of using Amazon is if it doesn't work out for you, send it back.

Good luck and hope you enjoy your new Cayenne.

1. The wear sensors usually get damaged when removing the old pads. I'd suggest getting replacements to have on hand when you do the job. If the brake warning light is lit up, at least one of the sensors has already been damaged and isn't reusable.

2. The red calipers are the GTS/Turbo calipers. These are "radial" mounted calipers. The bolts holding them to the car are one-time use according to Porsche. People do reuse them, but put some blue-loctite on them if you do. I replace mine. There are also two long rods that make moving the front caliper out of the way of the rotor MUCH easier. They were available through SnapOn in the US as a VW tool (go figure).

3. My suggestion for a scan tool is the Foxwell NT530. Aside from being useful on other manufacturers' vehicles (you get one manufacturer with it, others can be purchased for around $50) software updates on it are free for "life".. Cost is around $150. This is a case where I suggest you buy it from them and not Amazon. The US importer is Foxwell Diag | Foxwell Official Site | OBD2 Scanner & Diagnostic Tool - if you head over to our sister forum, planet-9.com - there is a diagnostics subforum where various diagnostics tools have been reviewed. There is a lot of information there from people who use the tools extensively.

Just to add to what Don said - the caliper pin specialty tool really makes the job easy and it’s a small investment if you’re going to have the car for a while.

I believe the the SnapOn tool is just a re-branded version of the Baum Tools product which can be found here - T10439 BRAKE CALIPER R&I PINS - Baum Tools

Although it looks like Baum might currently be out of stock on them.

I bought mine off eBay only to find that Baum was the original manufacturer and/or distributor - it was same price so you may find an eBay listing where you can source it.

Those are the tools.. IIRC - when I bought them off the SnapOn company (on-line, but not the SnapOn website..) the pair of them was around $18. That was about 5 years ago though, so prices have apparently gone up. If anyone is close to me and wants to come over and borrow them, I'm open to that... I don't want to get involved in shipping them out to anyone, by the time that's all done you might as well buy them.

I'd suggest anyone seeking these Google T10439 - you'll find multiple sources of them including the original SnapOn source:https://vw.snapon.com/SpecialToolsDetail.aspx?itemId=16580042 - but they're out of stock on SnapOn. Used off eBay might be the best bet.

Thank you everyone for the information. I wish I had seen that before I did the pads. I did the pads and got an iCarsoft scanner Which has been very helpful. I tried to do the front air sturts myself and failed. I could not separate the upper control arm ball joint from the knuckle. I had 2 different ball joint separators and neither one would break it loose. 1 of them even ripped the ball joint boot on the control arm. So I brought it to a Porsche shop and they replaced the 2 front Air struts and 1 control arm, Oil change. I picked this Cayenne up with 63k on it. I also just did new spark plugs and coil packs yesterday. A few of the plugs were not all that tight. So I am glad I have done all this maintenance. The Cayenne is running mint now.
