When the Porsche Cayenne gets its mid-cycle refresh in 2014, the German automaker will offer a plug-in hybrid variant to the SUV lineup called e-Hybrid.

Similar in concept to the Porsche Cayenne Hybrid, the e-Hybrid will gain a significant upgrade to electrical power and capacity, aiming for more than a 15-mile EV range. Porsche is aiming to have the electric motor produce around 95 to 100 hp, so in combination with the 333-hp supercharged V6 the Cayenne e-Hybrid will have a combined output of around 420 hp.

The German automaker is also planning to add its e-Hybrid system to the Panamera, and its fast charger that’s currently under development for its 918 Spyder could be used on both the Cayenne and Panamera e-Hybrid models.

In addition, Porsche is also considering an expansion of powerplant offerings for the US Cayenne lineup, adding a 4.1-liter V8 twin-turbo diesel with 377 hp and 627 lb-ft of torque.

Honestly, I don't know why they bother trying to pacify the tree-huggers with these over-priced symbols. Battery technology is simply not far enough advanced to market a practical (and affordable) electric car of any kind. Hybrid, plug-in, all-electric, whatever. The amount of energy consumed in the production of current battery technology exceeds what these things are alleged to save in fossil fuel. And that doesn't include recurring recharge costs in terms of power from the grid, also fed by fossil fuel.

North America is sitting on top of the largest supply of natural gas in the world. AND 70% of the earth's surface is water. Money that's being wasted on this electric car scam should be spent on CNG vehicles, new and conversions AND on more aggressive research into hydrogen cars.
