Does Porsche need a Ferrari fighter?

With its new Macan model on the way to slot in under the Cayenne, Porsche is actively hunting new market segments to fill and could add two more models to its lineup at very different ends of the spectrum.

Under consideration by the German sports car maker are a mid-size luxury sedan to slot in underneath the Panamera and target vehicles like the BMW 5 Series. This new model is known internally as "Pajun."

Simultaneously, company execs are debating a new sportscar that would fit in between the 911 and its upcoming 918 Spyder supercar. Dubbed project 960, this new model would be a two-seater, mid-engine machine and use a bi-turbo V8 with more than 600 hp.

Porsche recently axed plans to develop a baby Boxster, code named Project 551. According to brand CEO Matthias Mueller, the current generation of customers might not yet be ready for such a car. Profit margins and prestige would also be thin on such a vehicle.

With a new Boxster now out, the Macan will head into production in 2014, preceded by the 918, which will showcase Porsche's new hybrid technology, using a 4.6-liter V8 engine and two electric motors to deliver as much as 770 hp.
