Am I being cheap, or does 2K sound like allot to put a trailer hitch on a 2010 gts? Anyway I purchased a curt hitch for $168 delivered, and now need to pick up the necessary wiring. If the oem stuff is plug and play I'll go that route, but need to know what I need. I've seen a few forum posts online about the procedure, but have not seen any regarding the 2010 body style, and was not sure if there was any differences in the wiring needed. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

It does sound like a lot, but I can only speak for MY2011 and beyond. But assuming there's little difference to MY2010, installation is time consuming. To install the hitch, the rear bumper cover must first be removed, then replaced once the hitch is in place. Then an OE electronic towing module must then be installed, followed by the wiring for a receptacle where you plug in the trailer connector. To establish necessary towing settings, the car has to know when there's a trailer attached. Plus you'll need a brake controller. Once all this is in place, plugging in the trailer electrical connector tells various car systems that a trailer is attached - and they reset appropriately. Doing so also connects the trailer brakes to the brake controller.

This is required for liability reasons. Porsche says you need a brake controller for any loads over 1650 pounds (to include the trailer). Assuming your Curt hitch is in the 6000# range, the dealer has to perform an installation that assumes the capacity of the hitch. If you only want to haul something like a bike carrier, you can have a body shop do the job. It's just bumper cover off, hitch on, bumper cover back on. But you have to let a subsequent buyer know that the hitch installation isn't rated for anything heavier than 1650 pounds. Otherwise you could be opening yourself up to legal problems.

If the automated hitch available for the newer models could be placed on my car it would be worth the 2K. If the module for 2010 is plug and play then this does not sound like a very complicated job. I just need to figure out what to order.

So I decided to install the trailer hitch myself. The dealer quoted me 2K, due to the fact that it would took his mechanic over 7 1/2 hours to complete the last one they did. He told me it would take me a day to do "in my driveway". I ordered a curt hitch $163 shipped to my door, factory wiring harness $185 + MA tax. It took me under two and a half hours to complete the install. Now if I could figure out where the second wire plugs in I'll be all set. I have looked for diagrams online, and think I may need to install a trailer control module as well. If anyone has any info on this it would be greatly appreciated. The "parts guy" at the dealer felt all I would need is the harness, but he did not seem very sure.

I just put in the Curt hitch myself this past weekend. Even with my 0 experience it didn't take nearly as much as 7 1/2 hours, let alone whole day. Typical dealer BS to get you to spend more money. I did find local body shops and hitch specialists that would install it for $150 to $250. But the satisfaction from DIY is just priceless.

Now I didn't do any of the wirings since my main use of the hitch is for bike rack. But I'm sure eventually I'd be towing something that requires this. If you don't mind Tooth, can you post the part number of the factory wire harness, and a simple tutorial to install it? I'd be much appreciated.

I am getting my Curt Trailer Hitch (Part 13220) tomorrow via FedEx from AutoAnything. I paid $157.64 shipped to my door.

I am going to follow these instructions (Cayenne Owners Gallery get just the Hitch installed. Not going to install the lights as I am using this for a dirt bike receiver/shifter kart receiver only.

I would be interested to see how to get the lights working properly if the need arises - SUBSCRIBED!

Yea Just got a quote for $2110.67
Parts: $1329.15 (I think I can get this for about $1000.00 on line)
Tax: $93.05 (No tax out of state)
Labor: $688.47 (DIY = Free!! Freee!!! FREEEEEEE!!!!)
Total: $2110.67 ($1000 clams is still ridiculous!!)

I dunno...don't the Tuorag ( or however that is spelled) hitches fit?

Whoa.!. Compared to the $650 factory installed towing option, that blows. Touareg/Cayenne/Q7 (2011->), same hitch

I had one just installed at Porsche dealer in Atlanta.
Full price would have been a little over 1800. I asked for a discount and drive out was 1662. Very steep price, but now that is on, I have no regrets.

So is there a DIY video or tutorial on installing a hitch? I have a 2014 Cayenne Diesel and want to tow a track car weighing about 4k lbs. Didn't get the tow pkg. from factory but manual says there's a wiring harness plug-in at the back. Dealer quote $2,100.:(

Real newbie here when it comes to towing, so any advice on hitch and/or trailer appreciated. Thanks!

$2100 is consistent with what others have reported, but can't say that I've seen a DIY video. You'll need a brake controller, a Porsche tow module, a rear 7 blade electrical receptacle, and of course the tow bar/ball mount/ball. Unless you go RF (wireless), the controller must be connected way up under the dash. It connects to the Porsche towing module, which in turn connects to both the car computer and the rear receptacle. Then the bumper cover has to come off for the tow bar installation. Lotta work - and expense - for what's otherwise a $700 factory towing package. I walked away from an otherwise decent GTS the other day, simply because it didn't have the tow package.

I have a 04 S with a factory trailer hitch. I don't think a trailer has ever been hooked up before. Running lights work. Brake/turn signle lights do not work. Any suggestions for testing or repairs?

As an update to this thread, I looked into add-on hitches for the Cayenne while I was searching for a replacement for my '12 Base Cayenne w/ a hitch. The Porsche hitch is ridiculously expensive and several respected brands are available as mentioned in this thread for much less. A wiring harness is now also available that is pretty much plug-n-play, may require a couple of splices. There are several youtube videos that show how to install the hitch and wiring, just do a little searching. I ended up finding a '17 Cayenne w/ the factory hitch so I'm good. I had bought the Porsche wiring adapter(Suncoast) for my '12 so I just transferred it over to the newer one and all is good. I don't tow really heavy stuff, so no need in my case for the brakes.
